The U.S. Capitol was placed on lockdown after reports of a shooting outside.

Law enforcement responded quickly to a situation that unfolded where a vehicle rammed into two Capitol Police officers.

The driver was shot by the officers, and was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

The suspect has now reportedly died.

More from Fox News:

The United States Capitol was locked down on Friday due to an “exterior security threat,” as the United States Capitol Police (USCP) said two officers were injured after a car rammed into them and sources said officers shot a suspect.

The suspect exited his car wielding a knife and was shot by the USCP. Fox News is told security officials believe the suspect was a “lone wolf,” not connected to any other group.

“Man, we just shot somebody,” an officer told Fox News. The suspect has since died.

“Due to an exterior security threat, no entry or exit is permitted at this time in any building in the Capitol complex,” a voice announcement throughout the complex sounded.

“You may move around the buildings but stay away from exterior windows and doors,” it also said.

The Capitol has had a large security presence since the January 6th riot.

Today’s incident unfolded despite the increased security.

Two people were seen put on stretchers and carried into separate ambulances.

Both the officers and the suspect were originally taken to the hospital.

Republican Senator Mitch McConnell responded to the situation:

“Praying for the United States Capitol Police officers who were attacked at the Capitol,” McConnell tweeted. “We are still learning what’s taken place. Grateful to all the USCP and first responders who are on the scene.”

The FBI Washington Field Office is providing support to the situation and helping the police.

The scene occurred right by the point where senators enter the Capitol building.
