Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei warned Friday morning that a “harsh retaliation is waiting” for the US after an American airstrike on a pair of cars at Baghdad’s airport killed Qassem Soleimani, the powerful head of Iran’s elite Quds Force, The Times of Israel reported.
“With him [Soleimani] gone, God willing, his work and his path will not be stopped, but severe revenge awaits the criminals who bloodied their foul hands with his blood and other martyrs in last night’s incident,” Khamenei added.
On Saturday, rockets were shot at a military base in Iraq where U.S. troops are stationed.
Mortars were fired at a high-security facility that houses the U.S. Embassy, according to multiple reports.
“Several rockets fell on Saturday inside Baghdad’s heavily fortified Green Zone, its Jadriya neighborhood, and the Balad air base housing U.S. troops,” Reuters reported.
“[Sirens] immediately rang out at the American compound in Baghdad hosting both diplomats and troops,” according to The Times of Israel.
There was no immediate word on who was responsible for the attacks or if there were any casualties, the Daily Wire reported.
Two days ago, U.S. forces killed top Iran general Qasem Soleimani, who was the head of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Quds Force.
Soleimani’s group is a designated terrorist organization.
“An Iranian official says at least 35 U.S. targets have been identified for retaliatory strikes after the country’s president chillingly vowed to exact revenge for the killing of General Qassem Soleimani,” according to The Daily Mail.
“Targets include ships in the Persian Gulf, the Strait of Hormuz and Tel Aviv,” the report added.
The Islamic Republic of Iran, which leads the world in state sponsorship of terrorism, has issued threatens against the U.S.
“State Department says Iran responsible for killing 608 U.S. troops during Iraq War. Qasem Soleimani led all Iranian and Iranian-backed forces in those operations. 17% of U.S. troops killed in Iraq from 2003 to 2011 orchestrated by Iran, State Dept says,” according to Fox News.
Amir Hatami, a commander in the Quds Force, said: “A crushing revenge will be taken for Soleimani’s unjust assassination.”
“We will take revenge from all those involved and responsible for his [Soleimani’s] assassination,” Hatami added.
Foreign Minister of Islamic Republic of Iran, Javad Zarif, said, “The US’ act of international terrorism, targeting & assassinating General Soleimani— THE most effective force fighting Daesh (ISIS), Al Nusrah, Al Qaeda et al—is extremely dangerous & a foolish escalation. The US bears responsibility for all consequences of its rogue adventurism.”
