President Trump teased a major announcement on Sunday morning in a tweet which was ultimately revealed to be the death of ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.

ABC News reports al-Baghdadi, who rose to power under the Obama administration, was killed in a special forces raid last night.

“Last night was a great night for the United States, and for the world,” Trump said in a press conference on Sunday morning. “A brutal killer–one who has caused so much hardship and death–has violently been eliminated…the world is now a much safer place.”

The president described that the terrorist leader ran from the special forces group into a “dead-end tunnel whimpering, crying, and screaming.” He later “ignited his vest, killing himself and his three children.”

“Baghdadi’s demise demonstrates America’s relentless pursuit of terrorist leaders and our commitment to the enduring and total defeat of ISIS and other terrorist organizations,” the president added.

“The thug who tried so hard to intimidate others spent his last moments in utter fear, in total panic and dread, terrified of the American forces bearing down on him,” he also said.

Here’s more, from ABC News:

The president confirmed that al-Baghdadi detonated a suicide vest that he was wearing as a U.S. special mission unit carried out a ground raid in Idlib. The building containing al-Baghdadi was leveled by U.S. operators, an official told ABC News Saturday night.

Al-Baghdadi was last seen alive in a video in April.

There had been a $25 million U.S. bounty on the head of al-Baghdadi, who, in his only previous video, recorded in a Mosul mosque in 2014, called himself “Caliph,” or leader of all Muslims.

In a tweet, White House Press Secretary Stephanie Grisham said Trump made “clear today that the United States will pursue all cowardly ISIS terrorists to the end. Last night’s Special Ops raid was a win for not only our country but the entire world.”
